Henrhyd Falls (called Sgwd Henrhyd in Welsh) is the tallest waterfall in southern Wales. It is located in the beautiful Brecon Beacons National Park. This amazing waterfall drops about 90 feet (27 meters)!

The waterfall is looked after by the National Trust, a group that protects special places. It is found in the county of Powys. The closest village is Coelbren. Many people think Henrhyd Falls is part of Wales' famous Waterfall Country, even though it's a little outside the main area.

How the Waterfall Formed

Henrhyd Falls was created by the small river, the Nant Llech. The water flows over a hard type of rock called the Farewell Rock. This rock forms the top part of the waterfall's cliff.

Below the Farewell Rock, there is another type of rock called Subcrenatum Sandstone. These rocks are part of a larger group of layers called the Marros Group. A crack in the Earth's crust, known as the Henrhyd Fault, runs near the waterfall. This fault helped create the steep drop where the water now falls.

Getting to the waterfall involves a steep walk down into the valley. There is a car park set up by the National Trust for visitors. It's a very popular place to explore!

Another path also leads down to the falls from the other side of the valley. This path starts from Heol Henrhyd, a road that goes through Coelbren village.

Famous Visitors and Filming Location

One famous person who visited this area was Sir William Edmond Logan. He was a geologist who studied rocks and landforms. He found ancient fossil trees about 1.5 kilometers (almost a mile) downstream from the falls. These fossil trees are now displayed outside Swansea Museum.

Henrhyd Falls is also famous for appearing in a movie! The final scene of The Dark Knight Rises was filmed here. The waterfall was used as the secret entrance to the Batcave in the film.
