Henri Carel van Zanten (born March 18, 1957 – died May 22, 2020) was a talented artist from the Netherlands. He lived and worked in Rotterdam. Henri was known for being an "omni artist" because he worked in many different art forms.
Early Life and Learning
Henri van Zanten was born in Rotterdam. He spent a lot of his childhood living in Canada and South Africa. This helped him learn to adapt easily to new places and different languages.
He went to college and studied Slavic linguistics. This is the study of languages from Slavic countries, like Russian or Polish. His teacher was a famous professor named Karel van het Reve.
His Amazing Career
Henri van Zanten started his career as an artist in 1982. He learned about the Stanislavski method, which is a special way actors prepare for their roles. It helps them feel real emotions on stage. His mentor, Jan Decorte, was a theatre expert from Belgium.
Henri was truly an "omni artist." This means he was good at many different types of art. He worked in:
- Theatre: Performing plays on stage.
- Performance Art: Creating live art experiences.
- Street Theatre: Performing outdoors for everyone to see.
- Television: Making his own TV shows.
- Comedy: Doing funny sketches and stand-up comedy.
- Acting: Playing roles in different productions.
- Directing: Guiding actors and shows.
One of his most famous roles was as the Master of the Scream in ’u’. This was a very special opera because it was sung entirely in Klingon, a language from the Star Trek universe!
Henri van Zanten passed away in Berlin in 2020.
