Henrietta Boggs's Life Story
Early Life and Education
Henrietta Boggs was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Her parents were Mary Esther Long and Ralph Emerson Boggs. In 1923, her family moved to Birmingham, Alabama. There, her father started a construction business.
After finishing high school, Boggs went to Birmingham–Southern College. She studied English and worked as a reporter for the student newspaper.
Life in Costa Rica and Becoming First Lady
During a summer break, Boggs visited her aunt and uncle in Costa Rica. While there, she met José Figueres Ferrer, whom she later married.
Figueres led a successful democratic revolution in the 1948 Costa Rican Civil War. He became president, and Henrietta became the First Lady. From this important position, she worked hard to help Costa Rican women gain the right to vote.
Over time, Boggs realized that her independent spirit did not fit well with politics. She divorced Figueres in 1954. She then moved with her children to New York City. There, she worked for Costa Rica's group at the United Nations. She also continued to follow her passion for writing.
Later Life and Legacy
Boggs returned to Alabama in 1969. She married Dr. Hugh MacGuire. She also helped start River Region Living, a city magazine. She later sold the magazine but continued to write for it until she passed away.
Henrietta Boggs was born during the 1918 flu pandemic. She died from COVID-19 at her home in Montgomery, Alabama, on September 9, 2020. She was 102 years old.
