Henrik Thrap-Meyer (born July 31, 1833, died December 29, 1910) was a famous Norwegian architect. He designed many important buildings across Norway, including churches and schools.
Henrik Thrap-Meyer was born in Bergen, Norway. He studied architecture at universities in Hannover and Zurich from 1855 to 1860. He also traveled to countries like England, Italy, and France to learn more about building styles.
He taught at Bergen's Drawing School from 1860 to 1863. In 1864, he opened his own architecture office in Christiania (which is now Oslo). For many years, he was one of Norway's top architects. He worked as a building consultant for the Church Ministry. This meant he was asked to design many schools, churches, and other public buildings.
Between 1886 and 1904, Thrap-Meyer worked on building the hospital for the Lovisenberg Deaconess College. This is a private college for nursing students in Oslo.
Famous Buildings by Thrap-Meyer
Henrik Thrap-Meyer is best known for his work on Victoria Terrasse. This is a large group of buildings in central Oslo. It was built in the 1880s.
The complex has three blocks with four or five-story apartment buildings. They are made of brick with a smooth, plastered finish. The buildings have a similar look and are topped with many domes and towers. Today, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs uses these buildings.
Thrap-Meyer also helped start important groups. These include The Norwegian Engineering and Architectural Association and the Oslo Handicraft and Industrial Association.
