Henrik Visnapuu (born January 2, 1890 – died April 3, 1951) was a famous Estonian poet and playwright. He wrote many poems and plays that are still important today.
Early Life and Education
Henrik Visnapuu was born on January 2, 1890, in a place called Helme Parish in Estonia. He went to several schools as a young boy. He attended a village school in Reola and a college in Sipe. Later, he studied at a municipal school in Tartu.
In 1907, he finished grammar school in Narva. After his exams, he became a primary school teacher. By 1912, he moved to Tartu. There, he taught Estonian literature at a high school for girls. At the same time, he also took classes in philosophy at the University of Tartu.
Career as a Writer
Visnapuu started publishing his poems in 1908. He became one of Estonia's most important poets in the 1920s and 1930s.
From 1917, he worked as a journalist for a newspaper called Tallinna Teataja. After that, until 1935, he worked on his own as a journalist and writer. From 1935 to 1944, he held a special job. He was the culture secretary for the Estonian government's Information Agency.
Henrik Visnapuu was a key member of a literary group called "Siuru". This group was started in 1917. Another famous poet, Marie Under, was also part of it. The "Siuru" group was inspired by a style of art and writing called Symbolism. Visnapuu's poems often used styles known as futuristic and expressionistic.
Later Life and Exile
In 1944, the political situation in Estonia changed. To stay safe, Henrik Visnapuu had to leave his home country. He moved to Germany. Later, in 1949, he moved again to the United States.
Death
Henrik Visnapuu passed away on April 3, 1951. He was 61 years old. He died in Long Island, New York, in the United States.
Interesting Facts
- A famous composer named Eduard Tubin used Visnapuu's poems in his music. This was for a piece called "Requiem for Fallen Soldiers" in 1979.
