A Life of Royal Heritage
Early Life and Family
Henrique Nuno João Miguel Gabriel Rafael was born on November 6, 1949. His birthplace was Bern, Switzerland. His parents were Duarte Nuno, Duke of Braganza and Maria Francisca of Orléans-Braganza. His father was the person who would have been king of Portugal if the monarchy still existed.
Henrique's full name included "Miguel Gabriel Rafael." This was a special naming tradition of the House of Braganza. It honored the three important archangels in the Catholic Church.
Returning to Portugal
For many years, the Portuguese royal family was not allowed to live in Portugal. This was due to something called the "Laws of Banishment." In 1950, these laws were changed. This meant Henrique's family could finally go back home.
In 1952, Henrique moved to Portugal with his parents and older brothers. This was a big moment for the family.
His Passing
Dom Henrique passed away on February 14, 2017. He was 67 years old. He died in Ferragudo, a town in Portugal. At the time of his death, he was fifth in line to the former Portuguese throne.
