Henry Bradstreet Cleaves (born February 6, 1840 – died June 22, 1912) was an important American politician. He served as the 43rd Governor of Maine. He was governor from 1893 to 1897.

Henry Cleaves' Early Life
Henry Cleaves was born in a town called Bridgton, Maine. This was on February 6, 1840. His parents were Thomas and Sophia Bradstreet Cleaves. He had four brothers and sisters. One of his brothers, Nathan, later became a judge. Henry went to local schools. He also studied at Bridgton Academy.
Serving in the Civil War
Henry Cleaves served as a soldier during the American Civil War. He joined the army in the summer of 1862. He started as a private soldier. He was in Company B, 23rd Maine Volunteers. This unit was led by Colonel William Wirt Virgin. Colonel Virgin later became a judge. Cleaves rose through the ranks. He became a lieutenant before he left the army.
Henry Cleaves' Political Career
After the Civil War, Cleaves went back to Bridgton. He helped with his family's farm. He also worked in the lumber business. In 1868, he started studying law. He became a lawyer in September 1869. He had a very successful career as a lawyer in Portland, Maine.
Becoming a State Representative
Cleaves was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1876. He was elected again in 1877. He represented the city of Portland. While in the House, he was chosen to lead the Judiciary Committee. This committee deals with laws and the justice system.
Serving as Attorney General
After leaving the Legislature, Cleaves worked for the city of Portland. He was the city solicitor from 1877 to 1879. Then, he became the Maine Attorney General. He held this important legal position from 1880 to 1884.
Governor of Maine
In 1892, the Maine Republican Party held a meeting in Portland. Henry Cleaves was chosen to run for governor. Everyone at the meeting agreed on him. He won the election in September 1892. He became governor on January 4, 1893. He was re-elected for a second term in 1894. During his time as governor, he helped Maine deal with money problems. These problems were caused by a big economic downturn in 1893. He finished his term as governor on January 2, 1897.
Later Life and Death
Henry Cleaves passed away on June 22, 1912. He was 72 years old.
