Henry Bennett (born September 29, 1808 – died May 10, 1868) was an American lawyer and politician. He served as a United States representative for New York. This means he was a member of the United States House of Representatives, which is part of the U.S. Congress. He held this important role for five terms, from 1849 to 1859.

Henry Bennett's Early Life and Education
Henry Bennett was born in a place called New Lisbon, in Otsego County, New York. His birthday was September 29, 1808. As a young person, he went to public schools in his area. Later in his life, he married Polly Maria Gibson.
Henry Bennett's Career in Law and Politics
Henry Bennett decided to study law. After his studies, he was "admitted to the bar" in 1832. This means he passed the necessary exams and was officially allowed to practice law as a lawyer. He worked as a lawyer in New Berlin, which is in Chenango County, New York. In 1846, he also served as the clerk for the town of New Berlin.
Serving in the U.S. Congress
Henry Bennett became a member of the United States House of Representatives. He was first elected as a member of the Whig Party. He served in the Thirty-first, Thirty-second, and Thirty-third Congresses.
Later, he was elected as a member of the Opposition Party for the Thirty-fourth Congress. Finally, he joined the Republican Party and was elected for the Thirty-fifth Congress. Overall, he served in Congress from March 4, 1849, until March 3, 1859. During the Thirty-fourth Congress, he was the chairman (leader) of the Committee on Public Lands. This committee dealt with issues related to public land in the United States.
After Congress: Later Career
In 1858, Henry Bennett tried to be nominated again for the Thirty-sixth Congress, but he was not successful. After that, he went back to working as a lawyer in New Berlin. He continued to practice law until he passed away.
Henry Bennett's Passing
Henry Bennett died in New Berlin, New York, on May 10, 1868. He was 59 years old. He was buried at St. Andrews' Cemetery in New Berlin, New York.
