Henry Clay McWhorter (born February 20, 1836 – died April 15, 1913) was an important lawyer, judge, and politician from West Virginia. He played a big role in the state's government during his time.

Early Life and Military Service
Henry Clay McWhorter was born in Ashley, Ohio, in 1836. When he grew up, he became a lawyer.
During the American Civil War, Henry McWhorter served in the Union Army. He became a captain. In 1863, he left active duty because he was injured. For the rest of the war, he worked as a clerk in a special office called the provost marshal's office.
Political Career in West Virginia
After the war, Henry McWhorter became a lawyer in 1866. He then started his political career in West Virginia.
Serving in the House of Delegates
McWhorter was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates four times. This is like being a representative in the state's law-making body. From 1868 to 1869, he served as the Speaker of the House. The Speaker is the leader of the House of Delegates. He was a delegate again from 1885 to 1887.
Becoming a Judge
Henry McWhorter was a member of the Republican Party. He attended their big meeting in 1868 as a delegate from West Virginia.
In 1888, he tried to become a judge on the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia, but he didn't win that election. However, in 1896, he was successfully elected to the court. He served a long term of twelve years as a Justice on the Supreme Court of Appeals.
Involvement with West Virginia Wesleyan College
Beyond his work in law and politics, McWhorter was also very involved in education. He was a member of the board of trustees for West Virginia Wesleyan College. This college was founded in 1890. McWhorter served on its board from the very beginning until he passed away in 1913. From 1897 until his death, he was the president of the college's board.

Henry C. McWhorter was married four times during his life.
- He married Mary Hardman in 1857. She passed away in 1878.
- He then married Eliza F. McWhorter in 1879. She died in 1881.
- In 1885, he married Lucy M. Clark. She passed away in 1900.
- Finally, he married Caroline M. Gates in 1904.
Henry C. McWhorter's brother, Joseph M. McWhorter, was also a well-known lawyer, politician, and judge in West Virginia.
