The Henry Champion House is a really old and special house in Colchester, Connecticut. It was built way back in 1790! This house is a great example of a building style called Federal architecture. A famous architect named William Sprat designed it. Colonel Henry Champion, who fought in the American Revolutionary War, had it built for his son, who was also named Henry. Because it's so important, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

What Does the House Look Like?
The Henry Champion House is located in the town of Westchester. You can find it on the west side of Westchester Road.
Outside the House
This house is two and a half stories tall. It's made of wood and has a special roof called a gambrel roof. This type of roof has two different slopes on each side. The outside walls are covered with clapboards, which are long, thin boards.
There are two brick chimneys inside the house. They are placed evenly and rise up behind the main roof. The back of the roof slopes down to the first floor. This makes it look a bit like a saltbox house.
Front of the House
The front of the house has five sections, called bays. The main door is in the middle. It has narrow windows on each side, called sidelight windows. There are also flat, decorative columns next to the door, called pilasters.
A small, gabled porch covers the entrance. The windows on the first floor have decorative tops called cornices. The main roof also has a fancy border with small block shapes, known as dentil moulding.
Who Lived Here?
The Henry Champion House was built in 1790. It was designed by William Sprat. He was a well-known architect from Connecticut. He designed many homes in both Connecticut and Vermont.
The Champion Family
Colonel Henry Champion built this house for his son, also named Henry. Both father and son were very involved in the American Revolutionary War. The younger Henry Champion was also an important local leader. He served in the state government, helping to make laws.
He was also a big part of the Connecticut Land Company. This company helped people settle new areas. They helped set up towns in parts of Upstate New York and Ohio.
