Henry Dickerson (November 27, 1951 – August 11, 2023) was an American professional basketball player and college basketball coach. He was born in Beckley, West Virginia. Dickerson was the head coach for the men's basketball team at North Carolina Central University from 2004 to 2009. He helped the Eagles start their journey in NCAA Division I competition from 2007 to 2009.

Playing Career

College Basketball Years

Henry Dickerson was a 6-foot-4-inch (1.93 m) guard. He weighed 190 pounds (86 kg). Dickerson played college basketball at the University of Charleston in West Virginia. He played there from 1969 to 1973.

He was named an NAIA All-American. This means he was one of the best college players in the NAIA. During his four years, he averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds per game. He is the only player in his conference's history to be named First Team All-Conference and Conference All-Tournament for four years in a row.

NBA Experience

From 1975 to 1977, Dickerson played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was a player for the Detroit Pistons and the Atlanta Hawks.

Before joining the Hawks in the 1976–77 season, Dickerson played in the Eastern Basketball Association. He played for the Syracuse Centennials. There, he averaged 27.1 points per game.

Coaching Career

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

Dickerson became the head coach at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) from 1997 to 2002. Before that, he was an associate head coach at UTC from 1989 to 1997.

As an associate head coach, he helped the teams achieve great success. They won six Southern Conference regular season titles. They also won four conference tournament championships. The teams made it to the NCAA Tournament four times. In 1997, they even reached the "Sweet 16" round. This was a big achievement for a team seeded #14.

North Carolina Central University

In 2004, Dickerson became the head coach at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). In his first season (2004–05), the Eagles had a 16–12 record. They reached the quarterfinals of the CIAA Tournament. His team also beat three teams that played in the NCAA tournament. This included wins against Catawba, Bowie State, and Virginia Union. Virginia Union later became the NCAA Division II national champions.

In the 2005–06 season, NCCU had a 10–18 record. They played against many strong teams. They had a big 43-point win against Columbus State University. That team finished with a 23–9 record and reached the NCAA Regional semifinals.

For their final season in NCAA Division II (2006–07), the Eagles finished with a 13–15 record. They defeated four ranked opponents. One of these wins was against Barton College on November 18, 2006. Barton College went on to win the NCAA Division II national championship. This was the second time in three seasons that Dickerson's team beat the eventual national champions.

Johnston Community College

In 2011, Henry Dickerson took on a new coaching role. He became the head coach at Johnston Community College.
