Henry Edward Doyle (1827 – 17 February 1893) was an Irish artist who painted and drew pictures. For 23 years, he was the director of the National Gallery of Ireland, a famous art museum.
Early Life and Art Career
Henry Edward Doyle was born in 1827. His father was John Doyle, who was also a well-known artist. Henry was trained to be an artist, just like his father.
In 1862, Henry Doyle helped represent Rome at a big art show in London called the 1862 International Exhibition. Because of his good work there, he was given a special award called a Knight of the Order of Pius IX.
He also helped organize other art shows in Dublin. For example, he was the Art Superintendent for the International Exhibition in 1865. He also helped with the National Portrait Gallery in 1872.
Leading the National Gallery of Ireland
In 1869, Henry Doyle became the Director of the National Gallery of Ireland. This was a very important job. He took over after the first director, George Francis Mulvany, passed away.
Henry Doyle worked hard for 23 years to make the National Gallery of Ireland much better. Even though the museum didn't have a lot of money, he helped it become a respected art gallery in Europe. He added many important artworks to the collection.
He was also a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy, which is a group for important artists in Ireland. In 1880, he received another special honor, becoming a Companion of the Order of the Bath. Henry Doyle passed away suddenly on 17 February 1893.

On February 6, 1866, Henry Doyle married Jane Isabella Ball. Her father, Nicholas Ball, was a judge. Jane's brother, John Ball, was a famous scientist.
Henry Edward Doyle's nephew was the famous writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote the Sherlock Holmes stories.
