Henry Filmer facts for kids
Henry Filmer (died 1543) was an English Protestant who lived in the 1500s. He is known as a martyr, which means he died for his religious beliefs. He was one of the group called the Windsor Martyrs during the time when King Henry VIII ruled England.
Filmer worked as a tailor, making clothes. He was also a church warden at St John the Baptist Church, Windsor, in Berkshire. A church warden is a person who helps manage the church's affairs. Henry Filmer was a Protestant, and he was concerned about the sermons given by the church's vicar, which he felt were too focused on Catholic teachings.
Standing Up for His Beliefs
Henry Filmer spoke out about his concerns. He even got support from the Bishop of Salisbury, who was an important church leader. This made a former Catholic mayor of Windsor, William Simonds, very unhappy.
However, a powerful priest named Dr. John London, who worked for another important church leader, Bishop Gardiner, had Filmer arrested. Four other people were arrested with him.
On August 4, 1543, Henry Filmer, along with Robert Testwood and Anthony Pearson, were executed for their Protestant faith. They were put to death by burning. Their deaths made them known as martyrs, people who sacrifice their lives for their beliefs.
