An important ancestor of Henry Grafton was Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Grafton (1663–1690). He was a son of King Charles II and his partner, Barbara Villiers. The name FitzRoy means "son of the king." Many families descended from King Charles II use this surname.

At this time, he also gained the title of Earl of Euston. However, he chose to continue using his previous title, Viscount Ipswich.
