Henry Croker Garde (born 9 February 1855 – died 9 August 1932) was an important doctor and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, which is like the state's parliament.

Henry Garde's Early Life and Education

Henry Garde was born on 9 February 1855 in Cloyne, a town in County Cork, Ireland. His father, Thomas William Garde, was a Church of England Rector. His mother was Sophia (née Colles).

Henry went to school at Midleton College. After that, he studied medicine at Queen's University, Belfast. He earned a special license from the Apothecaries' Hall of Ireland. This allowed him to practice medicine.

In 1886, Henry achieved an even higher medical qualification. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He even won a gold medal for getting the highest score on his exam!

Henry Garde's Medical Career

Before settling down, Henry Garde worked as a doctor on ships for some time. Around 1879, he arrived in Maryborough, Queensland. He started his own private medical practice there.

In 1884, he became the main surgeon at the Maryborough General Hospital. He worked there until 1902. Later, in 1911, he returned to the hospital as a resident surgeon.

When World War I began, Henry took a break from his hospital job. He joined the army as a major. He served in Egypt and also on hospital ships during the Gallipoli Campaign.

Henry came back to Maryborough in 1916 and continued working at the hospital. In 1918, he decided to open his private practice again. He kept working as a doctor until his health made him retire just a few months before he passed away.

Family Life

On 10 June 1886, Henry Garde married Ada Beatrice Hall in Maryborough. Ada passed away in 1945. Together, they had one son and four daughters.

Henry Garde died in Maryborough in August 1932. His funeral was held at his home on John Street. He was buried at the Maryborough Cemetery.

Henry Garde's Time in Politics

Henry Garde decided to enter politics. He represented a group called the Ministerialists. In 1902, he won a special election called a by-election. This election was for the seat of Maryborough in the Queensland Legislative Assembly.

A by-election happens when a politician leaves office or passes away before their term ends. In this case, the previous politician, Charles Barton, had died.

Henry Garde served in the Queensland Legislative Assembly for two years. In the 1904 state election, he was not re-elected. Two Labour politicians, William Mitchell and John Norman, won the seats instead.
