Henry Harriman (born June 9, 1804 – died May 17, 1891) was an important leader in the early Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He served as one of the First Seven Presidents of the Seventy from 1838 until he passed away. The town of Herriman, Utah was even named after him!

Who Was Henry Harriman?

Henry Harriman was born in Rowley, Massachusetts, in the United States. His parents were Enoch Harriman and Sarah Brocklebank.

Joining the Church

In 1832, when he was 28 years old, Henry Harriman was baptized. He became a member of the Latter Day Saint church. Orson Hyde, another early church leader, performed his baptism.

Moving West

Henry Harriman moved to Kirtland, Ohio, in 1834. Later that year, he joined a group called Zion's Camp. This group traveled to Missouri to help church members there.

In February 1838, Henry became one of the Seven Presidents of the Seventy. This was a significant leadership role. That same year, he helped lead a group called the Kirtland Camp. They moved from Kirtland to Daviess County, Missouri.

He then moved with other church members to Nauvoo, Illinois. This was a major gathering place for the Saints at the time.

Settling in Utah

Henry Harriman was one of the brave Mormon pioneers who traveled west. In 1849, he settled in Utah Territory. He lived at a place called Fort Harriman. He was the leader of the church members living there. Because of his leadership, the settlement was named in his honor. The spelling of the town's name was later changed to "Herriman."

Missionary Work

In 1857, Henry Harriman led a group of missionaries traveling east from Salt Lake City using handcarts. After this, he went to Great Britain to serve as a missionary. However, the Utah War caused him and other missionaries to return home earlier than planned.

From 1882 until his death in 1891, Henry Harriman was the Senior President of the Seventy. He served the church for many years.
