History of Herriman
How Herriman Was Founded
Herriman was started in 1851 by a few people, including Henry Harriman and Thomas Jefferson Butterfield. They built a fort where the community garden is today. You can still see two old black locust trees that were part of the original fort.
Becoming a City
For many years, Herriman stayed a small community. But in 1999, people living there wanted it to become an official town. They went around asking neighbors to sign a petition.
Later, a company called Rosecrest started building many new homes. This helped Herriman grow a lot. In 2007, a large area of land was added to Herriman from a nearby city, Bluffdale. This made Herriman much bigger and helped it officially become a city.
Geography of Herriman
Herriman covers about 23.1 square miles (59.9 square kilometers) of land. The city often adds new areas to its borders. For example, in 2022, a large housing development called Olympia was added on the west side.
Herriman shares its borders with other cities. To the east is Riverton, to the north is South Jordan, and to the southeast is Bluffdale.
Natural Events in Herriman
Dealing with Flooding

In 2018, a main water pipe broke, causing water to flood businesses and homes. This happened because a gardening tool accidentally hit the water line.
Understanding Wildfires
Herriman is in an area where wildfires can happen, especially because of its exposed mountains, dry plants, and open fields.
The Machine Gun Fire
On September 19, 2010, a large wildfire started near Herriman. It happened during a training exercise at Camp Williams, south of the city. A special bullet likely hit a rock, causing sparks that started the fire.
The fire burned about 3,500 acres of land. Firefighters worked hard to stop it. Sadly, three homes were destroyed, and another was damaged. Over 1,200 homes had to be evacuated to keep people safe, but most residents could return home a few days later.
