Early Life and Education
Henry Lee Adams Jr. was born in Jacksonville, Florida. He went to Matthew Gilbert High School in Jacksonville and finished in 1962.
He then studied political science at Florida A&M University. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1966. After that, he went to Howard University School of Law. He received his law degree, called a Juris Doctor, in 1969.
Starting His Legal Career
In April 1969, Mr. Adams became a Reginald Heber Smith Fellow. This program helped him learn about consumer rights and poverty law. He worked at the Duval County Legal Aid Association from 1969 to 1970. This group helps people who cannot afford a lawyer.
From 1970 to 1972, he worked as an assistant public defender. He helped people who were accused of crimes but could not pay for a lawyer. This was for the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Florida.
In 1972, he started working in private practice in Jacksonville. He worked with different law firms. In October 1979, Governor Bob Graham chose him to be a judge. He became a judge for the Fourth Judicial Circuit.
Becoming a Federal Judge
Henry Lee Adams Jr. served as a judge for the Fourth Judicial Circuit until 1993. That year, President Bill Clinton nominated him to a higher court. He was chosen to be a judge for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida.
The United States Senate approved his nomination on November 20, 1993. He officially became a federal judge four days later.
Serving the Middle District of Florida
Judge Adams first worked in the Tampa Division of the court. This was from December 1993 until April 2000. Then, he moved to the Jacksonville Division.
On April 8, 2010, Judge Adams took on "senior status." This means he still works as a judge but with a reduced caseload. It allows him to continue serving the court.
