Henry Long (born around 1544, died 1573) was an English politician from Shingay, Cambridgeshire. He lived during the time of King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.

His Family and Early Life

Henry Long was born in about 1544. His father was Sir Richard Long, and his mother was Margaret Donnington. A very important person, King Henry VIII, was actually his godfather!

Henry Long married a woman named Dorothy Clarke. She was the daughter of Nicholas Clarke from North Weston, Oxfordshire. Henry and Dorothy had one daughter together, Elizabeth (born around 1562, died 1611). Elizabeth later married William Russell, 1st Baron Russell of Thornhaugh.

After Henry Long passed away in April 1573, his wife Dorothy married again, this time to Sir Charles Morison. Dorothy had four more children with Sir Charles and lived until 1618.

What Henry Long Did

Henry Long was involved in public service. He served as the Sheriff for Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire from 1569 to 1570. A Sheriff was an important local official, like a chief law enforcement officer for the county back then.

In 1571, he became a Member (MP) for Cambridgeshire. This meant he was chosen to represent his area in the Parliament of England, helping to make laws and decisions for the country.
