Henry Mildmay (born November 25, 1619 – died December 3, 1692) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like the main part of the UK Parliament today. He served there many times between 1654 and 1692. During the English Civil War, he fought for the Parliamentary army.

Early Life and the Civil War

Henry Mildmay was the oldest son of Sir Henry Mildmay. His family lived in Little Baddow, England. He went to Felsted School and later studied law at Gray's Inn in 1632. When his father passed away in 1639, Henry took over the family estate.

The English Civil War began in 1642. Henry joined the Parliamentary army, fighting against the King. He quickly rose through the ranks. He started as a captain in 1642 and became a colonel by 1643.

During the war, he also took on many important roles. He helped collect money for the war effort in Essex. He also worked to organize defenses for different areas. In 1645, he became the governor of Cambridge Castle. He also served as a Justice of the Peace (J.P.), helping to keep law and order.

A Career in Politics

After the war, Henry Mildmay continued his public service. In 1654, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Essex. This meant he represented the people of Essex in the government. He was re-elected for Essex in 1656.

In 1659, he became an MP for Maldon. He continued to serve in Parliament during a time of big changes in England. In 1660, he was again elected as an MP for Maldon.

Later, in 1672, Henry faced some difficulties. He was accused of making false claims against someone. Because of this, he lost his public positions for a while. However, he didn't give up on politics.

He was re-elected as an MP for Essex in 1679. He continued to serve in Parliament in 1681, 1689, and 1690. He also got his role as a Justice of the Peace for Essex back in 1688. Henry Mildmay passed away in 1692 at the age of 83. He was buried in Little Baddow.

Family Life

Henry Mildmay was married twice. His first wife was Cicely Barker. They had two daughters together.

Later, on June 30, 1657, he married Mary Mildmay. With Mary, he had four sons and five daughters. Their eldest daughter, also named Mary (born 1660), later married Charles Goodwin. Charles Goodwin owned a place called Rowfant in Sussex.
