Early Life and Education
Henry Norris was born in 1554. He was the fourth of six sons. His parents were Margery and Henry Norris, 1st Baron Norreys. Henry grew up in Rycote, which is in Oxfordshire. He also spent time in Wytham, Berkshire.
In 1571, Henry went to Magdalen College, Oxford. This is a famous university in England. He studied there and later earned a special degree in 1588.
A Brave Soldier
Henry Norris had an exciting military career. He was a captain of English volunteers. In June 1583, he fought in Antwerp. This was in the Low Countries, which are now Belgium and the Netherlands.
Fighting in the Low Countries
In 1586, Henry served alongside his brothers, John and Edward. They were fighting in the Low Countries. After a big fight called the battle of Zutphen in September, Henry was honored. He was made a knight by Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester. This meant he was now called "Sir Henry Norris."
Service in Brittany
Sir Henry continued his military work. In May 1592, he went to Brittany. This area is in France. His job was to check on the English soldiers there. By December 1593, he was leading a large group of nine hundred English soldiers in Brittany.
Campaigns in Ireland
Later in his life, Sir Henry Norris spent time in Ireland. He was there with his brothers, John and Thomas. In 1595, he became a "colonel-general of infantry." This was a very important leadership role for foot soldiers.
In June 1599, Sir Henry joined a campaign in Munster, Ireland. He was fighting under Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex. During a battle with the Irish at Finniterstown, he was badly hurt in his leg. Sir Henry faced his injury with great courage. Sadly, he passed away a few weeks later from his wounds.
Political Life
Besides being a soldier, Sir Henry Norris was also a politician. He was a member of parliament for Berkshire. He served in this role twice. First, from 1588 to 1589. Then again from 1597 to 1598. As a Member of Parliament, he helped make laws for England.
