Joseph "Henry" Persons (born January 30, 1834 – died June 17, 1910) was an important American figure. He was a politician who helped make laws, a lawyer who worked with legal cases, and a soldier.
Early Life and Education
Henry Persons was born in Georgia in 1834. His family moved to Talbot County, Georgia, when he was young. He went to the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens. In 1855, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the university.
Service in the Civil War
During the American Civil War, Henry Persons served as a soldier. He was a cavalry captain in the Third Georgia regiment. This was part of the Confederate States Army.
Life After the War
After the Civil War, Henry Persons became a politician. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives. This is where lawmakers from different states meet. He served in the 46th United States Congress. He was an Independent Democrat.
Persons tried to be re-elected in 1880 but did not win. After that, he went back to Geneva, Georgia. He decided to study law. In 1885, he passed the test to become a lawyer. He then started working as a lawyer in Talbotton, Georgia.
Later in his life, Henry Persons helped his old university. He served as a trustee for the University of Georgia from 1894 until 1910. A trustee helps manage the university. He passed away in 1910 in Talbotton. He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in that city.
