Hugh Buchanan (September 15, 1823 – June 11, 1890) was an important figure in American history. Born in Scotland, he became a lawyer and a soldier. He also served as a U.S. Representative for the state of Georgia.

Hugh Buchanan was born on September 15, 1823, in Argyll, Scotland. When he was young, he moved to the United States. He first settled in Vermont. Later, he moved to Georgia.

Early Life and Education

In Vermont, Hugh Buchanan went to public schools. He then decided to study law. This meant learning about laws and how the legal system works. In 1845, he became a lawyer. This allowed him to practice law in court.

A Career in Law and Politics

In 1846, Buchanan started his law practice in Newnan, Georgia. He became involved in politics. He served in the Georgia State Senate in 1855 and 1857. This is a part of the state government that makes laws.

He also attended important political meetings. These were called the Democratic National Conventions. He went to these in 1856 and 1868. In 1860, he was a presidential elector. This meant he helped choose the president.

Serving in the Civil War

The American Civil War began in 1861. Hugh Buchanan joined the Confederate States Army in June of that year. He served as a Captain. He led Company D of the Phillips Georgia Legion Cavalry Battalion.

During the war, he was wounded. This happened on June 11, 1864. He was hurt in the chest during the Battle of Trevilian Station. He continued to serve until the war ended in 1865.

Back to Public Service

After the Civil War, Buchanan continued his public service. In August 1872, he became a judge. He served on the superior court of the Coweta circuit until September 1880.

He also helped write Georgia's constitution. He was a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1877.

Time in Congress

Hugh Buchanan was elected to the U.S. Congress. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served two terms in Congress. His time there was from March 4, 1881, to March 3, 1885. He decided not to run for re-election in 1884.

Hugh Buchanan passed away on June 11, 1890. He died in Newnan, Georgia. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.
