Henry Robert Morland (born between 1716 and 1719 – died 1797) was an English artist. He was known for painting portraits of people. One of his most famous paintings was a portrait of King George III. Henry Robert Morland was also the father of another well-known painter, George Morland, who was famous for painting animals.

Henry Robert Morland came from an artistic family. His father, George Henry Morland, was also a painter. Henry Robert followed in his father's footsteps. He became a painter of portraits and everyday scenes. He used both oil paints and crayons for his artwork.

Showing His Work

Henry Robert Morland showed his paintings in many art exhibitions. Between 1760 and 1791, he displayed about 118 works. He exhibited at important places like the Society of Artists and the Royal Academy in London.

Besides painting, Morland had other art-related jobs. He made special prints called mezzotints. This is a way of engraving pictures onto metal plates. He also fixed old paintings and sold art supplies. He even made his own crayons for artists to use!

Painting the King

For a while, Henry Robert Morland was very successful. He even painted a portrait of King George III. The king himself sat for the painting! This shows how important Morland was as an artist at the time.

Even though he earned a lot of money, he later lost most of it. He often had money problems in his later years. Henry Robert Morland passed away on November 30, 1797, in London. He had lived a life with many ups and downs.

Henry Robert Morland's wife, Maria Morland, was also an artist. She showed her paintings at the Royal Academy in 1785 and 1786. Their son, George Morland, became one of the most popular painters of his time. He was especially famous for his paintings of animals and country life.
