Henry Scrope, 9th Baron Scrope of Bolton (born around 1534 – died June 13, 1592), was an important English nobleman. He was the son of John Scrope, 8th Baron Scrope of Bolton. Henry Scrope was also a Knight of the Garter, which is a very special award given by the British monarch. He was known for being a very loyal supporter of Elizabeth I.
Henry Scrope's Life and Work
Henry Scrope was a strong supporter of Queen Elizabeth I. In 1559, he was a military leader during the siege of Leith. This event helped end the "Auld Alliance" between Scotland and France. From 1562 until his death, he was the Warden of the West Marches. This meant he was in charge of protecting the border between England and Scotland. He was also the Captain of Carlisle.
In April 1568, Mary, Queen of Scots came to England. She had lost a battle in Scotland and needed to escape. She arrived in Workington and then traveled to Carlisle. Henry Scrope quickly went to Carlisle with Sir Francis Knollys to take care of her. After a short time in Carlisle Castle, Mary was moved to Lord Scrope's home, Bolton Castle in Yorkshire. She had many servants with her. Six months later, she was moved again to Tutbury Castle.
In 1569, some Catholic noblemen in the north of England started a rebellion. This was called the "Rising of the North". Their goal was to free Mary, Queen of Scots, and bring back the old religion. As Captain of Carlisle, Henry Scrope helped stop this rebellion. In 1584, he was made a Knight of the Garter.
In September 1589, James VI of Scotland was waiting for his wife, Anne of Denmark, to arrive by ship. Henry Scrope sent some "very fat baked stags" to Edinburgh as a gift. He also tried to find a group of actors to send to Scotland for the celebration. However, the bride's journey was delayed, so these preparations were not needed. King James VI later wrote to Scrope. He explained his plans to sail to Norway and how Scotland would be governed while he was away. Henry Scrope found it hard to believe the king was going to Norway.
Henry Scrope died in Carlisle on June 13, 1592. His oldest son, Thomas Scrope, 10th Baron Scrope of Bolton, became the next Baron. After Scrope's death, Queen Elizabeth wrote a letter praising his loyal service to her.
