Henry Sloan (born in January 1870 – possibly died on March 13, 1948) was an African American musician. He played a type of music called Delta Blues. He is famous for teaching the blues to another well-known musician, Charlie Patton. After World War I, Henry Sloan moved to the city of Chicago.

His Early Life
Experts like David Evans believe that Henry Sloan was born in Mississippi in the year 1870. Between 1901 and 1904, he moved to a large farm, known as a Plantation, near Indianola.
A Traveling Musician
There is a story that Henry Sloan was a "hobo" or a traveling worker. The famous musician W.C. Handy reportedly saw Sloan playing his guitar at a train station in Tutwiler in 1903. Handy described the musician as a thin man with old clothes. He played his guitar by pressing a knife on the strings. This created a very unique and memorable sound. Handy said it was "the weirdest music" he had ever heard.
