Henry's Early Life and Titles
Henry became the Count of Arlon in 1226 after his father, Waleran III, passed away. This was his first major title.
In 1240, Henry married Margaret of Bar. Margaret was the daughter of Henry II of Bar. As part of their marriage agreement, Henry received Ligny-en-Barrois. This land was Margaret's dowry. However, Ligny was still under the rule of the County of Bar.
Conflicts and Peace
Henry later caused a problem by promising his loyalty for Ligny to King Theobald II of Navarre. This was against the agreement with the County of Bar. Henry's brother-in-law, Count Theobald II of Bar, used this as a reason to fight Henry.
Henry was captured in a battle at Prény on 14 September 1266. Two years later, King Louis IX of France helped them make peace. Henry was set free and got Ligny back. But it remained under the rule of the Barrois family.
Becoming a Powerful Count
Henry became the Count of Luxembourg and Laroche in 1247. He inherited these lands after his mother, Ermesinde, died.
In 1256, Henry took control of Namur. The ruler of Namur at the time, Baldwin II of Constantinople, was also the emperor in Constantinople. Baldwin later sold his rights to Namur to Guy, Count of Flanders. Guy then took Namur back from Henry.
To make peace, Henry and Guy came to an agreement. Guy married Henry's daughter, Isabelle of Luxembourg. This marriage helped to settle the conflict between them.
The Ninth Crusade
Henry also took part in a major religious war called the Ninth Crusade. He received a large sum of money from the Pope. With this money, he joined Edward I of England on the journey. The crusaders fought against the Mamluk Sultanate. Henry returned home after a truce was made.
Henry's Family
Henry and Margaret had several children together. Their children helped to continue the family line and rule different lands.
- Henry VI (died 1288): He became the Count of Luxembourg after his father.
- Waleran I (died 1288): He became the Count of Ligny. He started a new branch of the family, known as the Luxembourg-Ligny line in France.
- Isabelle (1247–1298): She married Guy of Dampierre.
- Philippa (1252–1311): She married John II, Count of Holland.
- Marguerite: She was known as the lady of Macheren.
- Felicitas
- Jeanne (died 1310): She became an Abbess at the Abbey of Clairefontaine.
Henry also had two sons outside of marriage:
- Henry, bastard of Luxembourg (died 1288): He married Isabelle of Houffalize.
- Baldwin
Sadly, all of Henry's sons died in the Battle of Worringen in 1288. This was a very difficult time for the family.
