History of Houffalize
Houffalize played a very important role during World War II. It was a key location during a major battle called the Battle of the Bulge. This battle happened in the winter of 1944-1945.
During this battle, two famous generals met in Houffalize. General Montgomery came from the north. General Patton came from the south. They joined forces to fight against the German army.
Sadly, the town of Houffalize was almost completely destroyed during the war. On the night of January 5-6, 1945, many planes from the British Royal Air Force bombed the town. This was done to block important roads and stop German supply trucks. It also cut off escape routes for German soldiers. General Patton even wrote a poem about the bombing in his diary.
International Connections
Houffalize is part of a special group called the Douzelage. This group is a unique town twinning association. It connects 24 towns from different countries across the European Union.
This active twinning started in 1991. The towns in the Douzelage often hold events together. For example, they might have a market where each country sells its local products. They also have festivals to celebrate their friendship.
