Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Henry Vaughan the younger (born in 1613 – died on December 26, 1676) was an important Welsh politician from Derwydd, Llandybie, in Carmarthenshire. He served as a Member of Parliament, which means he was a representative for his area in the country's government.

Who Was Sir Henry Vaughan?

Sir Henry Vaughan the younger was the son of Sir Henry Vaughan the elder. His father was also a long-serving Member of Parliament. The elder Sir Henry was a leader of the Royalist forces in Carmarthenshire during the English Civil War. The Royalists were supporters of King Charles I during this conflict. Sir Henry the elder gained the Derwydd estate through his marriage to his wife, Sage.

Fighting in the English Civil War

Just like his father, Henry the younger fought for the Royalist side during the English Civil War. This was a big conflict in England between those who supported the King and those who supported Parliament. In April 1645, Henry the younger faced a small battle at Bampton in the Bush. He was defeated by Cromwell, who was a very famous leader for the Parliament's army. Later, in 1648, Henry was captured at Tenby.

Life After the War

After the war ended and the King was restored to power, a period known as the Restoration began. In 1661, Henry the younger was made a knight, which is a special honor. He then took on several important roles in Carmarthenshire.

Important Roles in Government

From 1660 to 1667, Sir Henry served as a Justice of the Peace. This meant he helped keep law and order in his local area. He was also chosen as the High Sheriff of Carmarthenshire for 1661–62. The High Sheriff was a very important official responsible for law enforcement in the county. Additionally, he was a deputy lieutenant for Carmarthenshire from 1660 to 1667 and again from 1674 until he passed away. A deputy lieutenant helped the Lord Lieutenant, who was the King's main representative in the county.

Serving as a Member of Parliament

Sir Henry Vaughan the younger became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Carmarthenshire in 1668. He continued to serve in this role, representing his home county, until 1676.

His Final Years

Sir Henry Vaughan the younger passed away in 1676. He was buried in Llandybie church, which was near his home. After his death, his nephew, Richard Vaughan, took over the Derwydd estate.
