When he was 16, Richard went to Jesus College, Oxford in 1672. He then studied law at Gray's Inn starting in 1673. He became a lawyer in 1680. Later, in 1706, he became a senior member of Gray's Inn, called a "bencher." In 1676, he inherited Derwydd Mansion from his uncle, Sir Henry Vaughan. This large house was near Llandybie in Carmarthenshire.

Legal Career

Richard Vaughan had a long and successful career in law. He was appointed as the Recorder of Carmarthenshire. This was a legal role, like a judge, from 1683 to 1686 and again from 1688 to 1722.

In 1715, he also became a circuit judge. This meant he traveled to different towns in Carmarthenshire to hear court cases. He continued to serve as a judge until his death.

Political Career

Richard Vaughan was a very active politician. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Carmarthen in 1685. He served until 1687.

He was re-elected in 1689 and continued to be an MP for Carmarthen until he died in 1724. This means he was an MP for nearly 40 years!

Towards the end of his life, from 1718 until his death, Richard Vaughan was considered the Father of the House. This unofficial title is given to the MP who has served the longest without a break.

Family Life

In 1692, Richard Vaughan married Arabella. She was the daughter of Sir Erasmus Philipps, 3rd Baronet, who was also an MP. Arabella came from Picton Castle in Pembrokeshire.

Richard and Arabella did not have any children. After Richard Vaughan passed away, his property and estate went to his niece. She was married to John Vaughan, who was also an MP for Carmarthenshire.

A monument to Richard Vaughan can be found in Carmarthen Parish Church. It was created by the sculptor William Palmer.
