Henry White, 1st Baron Annaly (born 1791 – died September 3, 1873) was an Irish soldier and politician. He was also known as Baron Annaly.

About Henry White

Henry White's father, Luke White, became very rich. He earned his money as a bookseller and by running lotteries in Dublin. Henry's mother was Elizabeth de la Mazière.

In 1811, Henry White joined the army as a Cornet. This was a junior officer rank in the cavalry. He served in the Peninsular War, which was a big conflict in Europe. He fought in important battles like the Siege of Badajoz and the Battle of Salamanca. In 1812, he was promoted to Lieutenant.

Henry White's Political Career

Henry White was also active in politics. In 1823, he was elected to the House of Commons. This is like the main parliament in the United Kingdom. He represented County Dublin until 1832.

Later, he also represented County Longford from 1837 to 1847. He served there again from 1857 to 1861. From 1841 to 1873, Henry White held the important role of Lord Lieutenant of County Longford. This meant he was the King's or Queen's representative in that county.

In 1863, Henry White was given a special title. He became a Baron, which is a type of noble title. His full title was Baron Annaly, of Annaly and Rathcline.

Family Life

Lord Annaly married Ellen Dempster on October 3, 1828. She passed away on May 12, 1868. They had eight children together:

  • Henry White (born September 4, 1830 – died 1860)
  • Eleanor Eliza White (died April 29, 1907)
  • George Frederick White (born October 1, 1831 – died 1846)
  • Francis Samuel White (born March 17, 1836 – died April 1855)
  • Charles William White (1838–1890)
  • Emily Beaujolais White (born January 4, 1844 – died December 18, 1923)
  • Robert White (born December 8, 1844 – died March 3, 1866)

Henry White lived five years longer than his wife. He died on September 3, 1873. His eldest son, Luke, took over his title as Baron Annaly.
