Early Life and Education
Luke White was the son of Henry White, who was the 1st Baron Annaly. His mother was Ellen Dempster. Luke went to a famous school called Eton College in England.
After school, he joined the British Army. He became a captain in the 13th Light Dragoons. Later, he was a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Longford Rifles, which was a local military group.
A Career in Politics
Luke White started his political career in 1859. He was elected to represent County Clare in the British Parliament. However, he lost his seat the next year after a challenge.
He then represented County Longford from 1861 to 1862. After that, he served as a Member of Parliament for Kidderminster from 1862 to 1865.
Luke White worked in the Liberal government led by Lord Palmerston. From 1862 to 1866, he was a Junior Lord of the Treasury. This meant he was a government official who helped manage the country's money.
Important Roles and Honors
From 1868 to 1873, Luke White had an important role as State Steward. He worked for the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland, who was the main representative of the King or Queen in Ireland at the time. The Lord-Lieutenant he worked for was Earl Spencer.
He also held several honorary positions. He was the Sheriff of County Dublin in 1861. He was also Sheriff of County Longford in 1871. These were important local roles. From 1873 to 1874, he was the Lord-Lieutenant of County Longford. This was another high-ranking local position.

His Family Life
Lord Annaly married Emily Stuart in 1853. Her father was James Stuart. Their family home in England was Titness Park, located near Cheapside in Sunninghill, Berkshire.
Luke and Emily had a large family with five sons and three daughters. All of their sons chose to have careers in the military. One of their sons, Robert, became a Brigadier-General in the 184th Infantry Brigade.
His daughter, Violet, married Major Lord Percy St. Maur. Percy was the second son of Algernon St Maur, 14th Duke of Somerset.
Lord Annaly passed away in March 1888 when he was 58 years old. His oldest son, also named Luke, took over his title as Baron Annaly. Lady Annaly, his wife, passed away later in 1915.
