Who Was Henry de Abergavenny?
Henry de Abergavenny was a Benedictine monk. Benedictine monks follow a special way of life focused on prayer and work. Henry first became the Prior of Abergavenny. A Prior is the head of a monastery or a religious community.
Becoming a Bishop
After his time as Prior, Henry was chosen to become the Bishop of Llandaff. The position of Bishop had been empty for two years before he took over. He officially became Bishop on December 12, 1193. This was a very important step in his church career.
Important Work as Bishop
As Bishop of Llandaff, Henry had many responsibilities. He helped organize the Cathedral chapter at Llandaff Cathedral. A Cathedral chapter is a group of clergy (church officials) who help the Bishop manage the cathedral.
Henry appointed fourteen prebends to this chapter. These prebends were important church members. They included eight priests, four deacons, and two sub-deacons. Their job was to help with church services and administration.
Helping King John
Henry de Abergavenny also played a role in a big historical event. In 1199, he helped at the coronation of King John. A coronation is a special ceremony where a king or queen is officially crowned. This shows that Henry was an important figure in both the church and the royal court.
His Final Years
Henry de Abergavenny died on November 12, 1218. After his death, William de Goldcliff became the new Bishop of Llandaff. Henry was buried inside Llandaff Cathedral. His gravestone is believed to be near the altar, a special place in the church.
