Herbert Ehrenberg (born December 21, 1926 – died February 20, 2018) was an important German politician. He served in the German government and was a member of the Bundestag, which is like Germany's parliament.

Early Life and Education
Herbert Ehrenberg was born in a place called Kollnischken in East Prussia. This area is now part of Poland. He attended school in Goldap until 1943. At that time, he was called to join the Wehrmacht, which was Germany's armed forces.
After World War II, he was a Prisoner of war until 1947. Once he was released, he finished his high school education. He then went on to study economics at universities in Wilhelmshaven and University of Göttingen. In 1958, he earned his doctorate degree.
Starting a Political Career
Ehrenberg began his career by joining a trade union. In 1949, he became a member of the Public Services, Transport and Traffic Union (ÖTV). A few years later, in 1955, he joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany, also known as the SPD. This is one of Germany's main political parties.
In 1964, he became a leader in another union, IG Bau-Steine-Erden. He then started working for the government. In 1968, he joined the Federal Ministry of Economics. The next year, he moved to the German Chancellery, which helps the Chancellor run the country.
Serving as a Federal Minister
From 1971 to 1972, Herbert Ehrenberg was a Secretary of State. This was at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. This ministry deals with jobs and social support for people.
Later, from 1976 to 1982, he became the Minister of this same ministry. This was a very important role. He helped make decisions about work and social welfare for all of Germany.
Roles in the Bundestag and Beyond
Herbert Ehrenberg was also a member of the Bundestag from 1972 to 1990. This means he was an elected representative for the people. From 1974 to 1976, he was the Vice-President of the SPD group in the Bundestag. He was also part of the SPD's main leadership board from 1975 to 1984.
Even after leaving government, he continued to be active. From 1997 to 2001, he chaired an honorary board. Then, from 2001 to 2003, he was the first President of the Internationaler Bund Freier Träger der Jugend-, Sozial- und Bildungsarbeit. This organization helps young people and social projects. After that, he became its Honorary President.
Herbert Ehrenberg passed away on February 20, 2018, at the age of 91.
