A Look at the Ministry's History
The idea for this ministry started a long time ago.
Early Beginnings
The first version of this ministry was created on February 13, 1919. This was during the time of the Weimar Republic, which was Germany's government after World War I. It was called the Reich Ministry of Labour. Its job was to take over from an older office that dealt with labor issues.
The first Minister for Labour was Gustav Bauer. He was a politician from the Social Democratic Party of Germany. He later became the leader of the government (Chancellor).
During World War II
When the Nazi Party came to power in 1933, Franz Seldte became the Minister for Labour. He officially held this job until 1945. However, other people often managed the daily work of the ministry during this time.
After World War II
After World War II, Germany was divided. The ministry was started again in West Germany on September 20, 1949. Its main office was in Bonn at that time.
In the year 2000, the ministry moved its main office to Berlin. This move was part of a plan to bring more government offices back to Berlin after Germany was reunified. The building it moved into had a long history, being used by other government groups before.
Changes Over Time
Between 2002 and 2005, the ministry was actually split up. Its jobs were given to other ministries, like the one for economics and the one for health. But in 2005, when a new government was formed, the ministry was brought back together. Its name was also slightly changed to what it is today: the Federal Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs.
Who Leads the Ministry?
The person in charge of the Federal Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs is called the Federal Minister. This person is a very important member of the German government.
