Herbert Friedman received many honors for his scientific work. In 1960, he was chosen to be a member of two important groups: the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the United States National Academy of Sciences. These are very respected groups for top scientists.

In 1964, he received the Eddington Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society. This is a special award given to astronomers for their amazing discoveries. In the same year, he also became a member of the American Philosophical Society. This shows how much his work was valued by other scientists.
