Herbert Henry Woollard facts for kids
Herbert Henry Woollard (born August 2, 1889 – died January 18, 1939) was an Australian scientist. He was a doctor, an expert in the human body's structure (an anatomist), and an army medical officer. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a big honor for scientists.
Woollard was born in Horsham, Victoria, Australia. He studied at the University of Melbourne and earned a medical degree (MD).
A Doctor in Wartime
When World War I began in 1914, Woollard joined the Australian Army Medical Corps. He worked as a doctor for the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade during the Battle of Gallipoli. Later, he served with the Australian Army in France. He was injured during the Battle of Pozières. When the war ended, he received the Croix de Guerre, a special award for bravery, and finished his army service in London.
A Career in Anatomy
After the war, Woollard first planned to become a surgeon. But then he decided to become an anatomist, a scientist who studies the structure of living things. He started working as an anatomy lecturer at University College London. In 1921, he also spent time in America. He had a special scholarship called a Rockefeller scholarship to do research at Johns Hopkins Medical School.
From 1923 to 1927, he was an assistant professor of anatomy at University College, London. Then he became a professor at the University of Adelaide (1928–29) and St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, London (1929–36). Finally, he was appointed Professor of Anatomy at the University of London. He also earned another advanced science degree (DSc) there. Woollard was also the editor of the Journal of Anatomy from 1936 to 1938.
Important Discoveries and Recognition
In 1938, Herbert Woollard was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very important group for scientists. He was honored because he was "known for his important studies on the human body, how it compares to animals, the nervous system, and human development."
He passed away in London, England, in 1939. He was married to Mary Wilson Howard and they had two sons.
