Early Life and Education
Herbert Hutner was born in New York City on December 21, 1908. He was a very smart student. He went to Columbia University, finishing his studies in 1928. After that, he earned a law degree from Columbia Law School in 1931.
Herbert Hutner's Career
Herbert Hutner began his career on Wall Street, a famous financial area in New York City. He started a company called Osterman & Hutner with Lester Osterman.
Later, he became the chairman of several different companies. These included Sleight & Hellmuth Inc., Pressed Metals of America, Struthers Wells Corp., and the Platinum Mining Co. He also served as the President of the New England Life Insurance Co.
From 1982 to 1990, Hutner worked for the U.S. government. He was the chairman of the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts. This meant he advised presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush on art-related matters.
Giving Back: Philanthropy
Herbert Hutner believed in helping others. He gave money to many charitable groups. He supported the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA, which helps people with eye problems. He also helped the Young Musicians Foundation, which supports young musical talent.
Additionally, he was one of the people who helped start the Los Angeles Music Center. This is a large performing arts center in Los Angeles.
Personal Life
Herbert Hutner was married three times during his life. With his first wife, Marjorie Mayer, he had two children: a son named Jeffrey (born in 1942) and a daughter named Lynn (born in 1945).
His second wife was the famous actress Zsa Zsa Gabor. They got married on November 5, 1962, but later divorced on March 3, 1966. His third wife was Juli Reding, who was also an actress. They married on November 28, 1969.
Death
Herbert Hutner passed away on December 7, 2008. He died at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 99 years old, just two weeks shy of his 100th birthday.
