Herbert Jackson

Sir Herbert Jackson (born 1863, died 1936) was a brilliant British chemist. He was given a special honor, becoming a "Sir," because of his important work during the First World War. He helped create special kinds of glass that could handle heat and were used for military equipment.

Herbert Jackson was born in Hampstead, London, on March 17, 1863. He started studying at King's College, London in 1879. Later, in 1905, he became a professor there, teaching about organic chemistry. By 1914, he was named the Daniell Professor of Chemistry.

During the First World War, Sir Herbert worked for a government group called the Optical Munitions and Glassware Department. This group made important optical tools and glass for the war effort. In 1918, he left his teaching job to become the Director of Research for the British Scientific Instrument Research Association. This group focused on researching scientific tools and instruments.

Sir Herbert Jackson passed away on December 10, 1936. He was buried at the parish church in Hampstead, where he was born.

His Important Research

Sir Herbert Jackson made several important scientific contributions during his career. He was known for his work on X-rays and also for his research into cleaning products.

Developing the X-ray Tube

In 1896, just one year after Wilhelm Röntgen discovered X-rays, Sir Herbert showed off his own invention to the Royal Society. This was an X-ray tube that became a model for many gas-type X-ray tubes used after that. His design helped improve how X-rays were made and used.

Research on Cleaning Products

In 1907, Sir Herbert presented more of his research to the Royal Society of Arts. This time, his work was about detergents and bleaching agents. These are the kinds of cleaning products used in the laundry industry to wash clothes and make them clean. His studies helped improve how these products worked.
