Herbert Jasper facts for kids
Herbert Henri Jasper (born July 27, 1906 – died March 11, 1999) was a very important Canadian scientist. He studied the brain and how it works. He was a psychologist, a physiologist, and a neurologist. He also specialized in epilepsy.
He was born in La Grande, Oregon, in the United States. He went to Reed College and then earned his PhD in psychology from the University of Iowa. Later, he earned another science degree from the University of Paris. This degree was for his research into how the brain and nervous system work.
Studying the Brain
From 1946 to 1964, Herbert Jasper was a professor at the Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University. He taught about experimental neurology. After that, from 1965 to 1976, he was a professor at the Université de Montréal. He taught about neurophysiology, which is the study of how the nervous system functions.
His most important work was done with another famous scientist, Wilder Penfield, at McGill University. Together, they made big discoveries about the brain. Dr. Jasper was a member of many important scientific groups. These included the American Academy of Neurology and the Royal Society of Medicine. He wrote more than 350 scientific papers. These papers shared his discoveries with other scientists.
Awards and Honours
Herbert Jasper received many awards for his amazing work. These awards recognized his important contributions to science.
- In 1972, he became an Officer of the Order of Canada. This is a high honour for Canadians.
- In 1981, he won the Ralph W. Gerard Prize in Neuroscience. This award is for top brain researchers.
- In 1985, he received the McLaughlin Medal from the Royal Society of Canada.
- In 1995, he was added to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. This means his work greatly helped medicine in Canada.
- In 1995, he also received the Albert Einstein World Award of Science. This is a major international science award.
- In 1996, he was made a Grand Officer of the National Order of Quebec. This is a very high honour in Quebec.
