Frederic Herbert Trench (born November 12, 1865 – died June 11, 1923) was an Irish poet. He was known for writing many poems and also worked in theatre.

The Life of Frederic Herbert Trench

Frederic Herbert Trench was born in a place called Avonmore, County Cork, in Ireland. He went to school at Haileybury and then studied at Keble College, Oxford University. After finishing his studies, he started working as an examiner for the Board of Education in 1891.

In 1908, one of Trench's poems, Apollo and the Seaman, was turned into a special piece of music called a Dramatic Symphony. A composer named Joseph Holbrooke wrote the music, and it was performed by a famous conductor, Thomas Beecham.

After this, Trench became very involved in theatre. He worked with his friend Thomas Evelyn Scott-Ellis, 8th Baron Howard de Walden. Together, they helped stage two important plays at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket in London. They put on The Blue Bird by Maeterlinck in 1909 and The Pretenders by Ibsen in 1913.

Later in his life, Frederic Herbert Trench enjoyed traveling. He passed away in Boulogne-sur-Mer, a town in France. Some of his poems were also used in musical pieces by composers like Arnold Bax and Mildred Lund Tyson.

Frederic Herbert Trench also translated some books from other languages into English. He helped bring stories by the Russian writer Dmitry Merezhkovsky to English readers:

  • "The Romance of Leonardo da Vinci" (1904) – Another novel he translated.
