Heritage University is a private university located on the Yakama Indian Reservation in Toppenish, Washington. It offers different types of college degrees. Students can earn associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, and master's degrees here.
University History
Heritage University started a long time ago in 1907. It was first known as Holy Names College. It was founded by a group called the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in Spokane, Washington.
Later, the college changed its name to Fort Wright College. In 1982, the main offices of Fort Wright College moved to Toppenish. At this time, it was renamed Heritage College. The college also had a campus in Omak. Five years later, in 1987, the Spokane campus closed down.
A fire happened on July 8, 2012. It destroyed Petrie Hall, which was the oldest building at the university.
Working with Other Colleges
Heritage University has special agreements with other colleges. These are called cooperative agreements. They help students get a four-year degree from Heritage.
This program started in 1993. It allowed students from Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake to transfer their credits. This meant their work at the community college counted toward a bachelor's degree at Heritage.
Similar agreements were made with other colleges. In 2003, Heritage partnered with Columbia Basin College in Pasco. In 2006, they also teamed up with Highline Community College in Des Moines. These partnerships make it easier for students to continue their education.
