The Story of Herman
Herman was started in 1901. It grew up along a branch of the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway. This railway helped connect Herman to other places like Nestoria and L'Anse.
How Herman Got Its Name
The community is named after a man named Herman Keranen. He was born in Finland in 1862. Herman Keranen worked in the lumber camps. He saved his money and bought several pieces of land. He built a simple log cabin.
Herman Keranen worked hard to create a large and successful farm. His farm became the biggest and most productive in the area. Because of his efforts, the community was named after him.
Early Days and Growth
For many years, the main way to get to Herman was by train. The Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railroad Company provided this important link.
As the community grew, more services were added:
- A school was built in 1903, so children could learn close to home.
- A post office opened in 1904. This made it easier for people to send and receive mail. The post office stayed open until 1970.
- In 1912, the Herman Athletic Association was formed. This group likely helped organize sports and activities for the community.
- A farmer's cooperative association was started in 1919. This group probably helped local farmers work together and sell their goods.
- Herman also had at least one store and a business that sold various goods.
Some of the other early residents who helped build the community included Matt Anderson, Gust Kontio, Erkki Kayramo, Nels Majhannu, Jacob Kuusisto, Henry Pasanen, Joseph Pekkala, and Eli Korpi.
A Big Snowfall
Herman is known for its snowy winters. On December 19, 1996, the town received a huge amount of snow. It was the single largest snowfall in Michigan's history! About 30 inches (76 centimeters) of snow fell in just one day. That's like two and a half feet of snow!
