Florstedt's Role in World War II
Arthur Hermann Florstedt joined the SS in 1933. The SS was a powerful group in Nazi Germany. He rose through the ranks, becoming an SS-Standartenführer by 1938. This was a high position in the SS.
Serving at Concentration Camps
From 1940 to 1942, Florstedt worked at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. These camps were terrible places where many people were held against their will. In October 1942, Florstedt became the third commander of the Majdanek concentration camp. This camp was a very sad place where many people suffered.
Accusations and Trial
Florstedt was investigated by an SS judge named Georg Konrad Morgen. He was accused by the SS of stealing large amounts of valuable items. These items were taken from people who were victims of the Holocaust. The valuables were stored at Majdanek.
Florstedt was one of only two Majdanek commanders put on trial by the SS itself. He was charged with corruption, which means he was stealing from the Nazi government. He also faced accusations of harming prisoners.
His Disputed Fate
Arthur Florstedt was replaced as commander by Martin Gottfried Weiss. It is believed that Florstedt was executed by the SS on April 5, 1945. This was the same day another commander, Karl-Otto Koch, was executed. However, while Koch's execution is confirmed, what happened to Florstedt is still not fully known.
