A Look Back: Herminie's History
Herminie (say it hurr-many) got its name from Herminie Berwind. Her husband, Charles Berwind, was the boss of a company called Ocean Coal Company.
The First Mine in Herminie
The very first coal mine in Herminie was called "Ocean No. 1 Mine." It opened in 1893. The Berwind-White Coal Company, which owned Ocean Coal Company, started this mine.
To house the miners, fifty "double houses" were built. These were like two homes joined together. Five single houses were also built for the managers on Church Street. By 1900, the mine was a big employer, with 271 people working there.
Important Strikes in Herminie
Herminie saw two big strikes where miners stopped working to ask for better conditions.
- The first strike was in 1910–1911. During this time, miners were forced to leave their company homes. These homes were then used for new workers who crossed the picket lines. The miners did not win this strike.
- Another strike happened in 1922. This time, the miners were successful. Their union, the United Mine Workers, was officially recognized.
The Ocean No. 1 Mine closed in 1938 because of water problems. However, other mines nearby kept working for some time.
