Herrings is a small community called a hamlet in Jefferson County, New York, United States. It used to be a village. In 2020, about 116 people lived there.

Herrings is named after two brothers who owned a paper mill in the area a long time ago. It is located on the western edge of the town of Wilna, and it's east of a bigger city called Watertown.

Herrings History

Herrings was once an important stop for stagecoaches. Stagecoaches were like old-fashioned buses pulled by horses. People would travel on them between towns.

Herrings officially became a village in 1921. However, in 2017, the community decided to change its status back to a hamlet. This means it is no longer an official village.

Herrings Geography

Herrings is located in the eastern part of Jefferson County. You can find it at these coordinates: 44°1′26″N 75°39′35″W / 44.02389°N 75.65972°W / 44.02389; -75.65972. It sits on the southwestern edge of the town of Wilna.

The community is on the north side of the Black River. This river creates the border between Wilna and the town of Champion.

Herrings covers a total area of about 0.50 square kilometers (0.19 square miles). Most of this area is land, but about 0.10 square kilometers (0.04 square miles) is water.

New York State Route 3 is a main road that goes through Herrings. This road leads west about 14 miles to Watertown, which is the main city of the county. It also goes southeast about 4 miles to Carthage.
