Exploring Hervey Range's History

The Hervey Range has some interesting historical spots. One of these is Thorntons Gap.

What is Thorntons Gap?

Thorntons Gap is a special place on the range. It was once a walking track. This track helped people get to goldfields long ago. It was an important route for miners and explorers.

Life on the Range

The Hervey Range area is mostly rural. This means it has lots of open land and not many buildings. You won't find many houses, big neighborhoods, or shops here. The main attraction is the tea house.

Greenvale Rail Trail Adventure

Another cool feature on the range is the old Greenvale Rail Trail. This trail used to be a railway line. It runs up the mountain and even goes into a tunnel.

The Greenvale Railway Line's Past

The Greenvale railway line was built in 1974. It connected a place called Cobarra (north of Townsville) to a nickel mine in Greenvale. The railway helped transport nickel from the mine.

The train line passed under the Hervey Range. It went through several tunnels in the mountains. The railway stopped working in 1993. This happened when the nickel mine closed down. After that, the train tracks were taken up. They were then used again for coal lines in Central Queensland.
