Hester is a small, quiet town in the beautiful South West region of Western Australia. It's located just 7 kilometers north of a bigger town called Bridgetown. This little town has a cool history, especially with trains!
A Glimpse into Hester's History
How Hester Began
Hester officially became a town in 1899. Before that, it was mainly a "siding" on the railway line. A siding is like a small extra track where trains can pull off to let other trains pass or to load and unload goods. The railway line, connecting Donnybrook to Bridgetown, first opened in 1898. This train line was very important for moving things around in the area.
Where the Name Hester Comes From
The town of Hester got its name from a nearby stream called Hester Brook. This brook was first written down on a map by a surveyor named John Forrest in 1866. The brook itself was named after Edward Godfrey Hester. He was one of the very first settlers in the Bridgetown area, arriving in the late 1850s. So, the town's name honors an important early pioneer of the region.
