Hester Villa is a special old house in East Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built around 1901 and is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. This means it's an important part of Queensland's history and heritage.

A Look Back in Time

Hester Villa was built around 1901. It was made for Captain Robert Pearn. He was a master mariner, which means he was a skilled ship captain. A cool fact is that a penny nailed above the front door shows the exact date it was finished! This house replaced the Pearn family's first home, which had sadly burned down.

Captain Pearn passed away in 1910. His wife, Louisa, then owned the house. The Pearn family lived in Hester Villa until 1968.

By the late 1970s, the house was in very poor condition. A special architect named Ray Oliver and his wife bought it. They carefully fixed it up, making sure to keep its original style.

What Hester Villa Looks Like

Hester Villa is made of timber and has a corrugated iron roof. It was built around 1901. The house sits on three blocks of land. This is a larger space than many homes in the area.

The house stands on timber stumps. The area under the house is closed off at the back. It has a stepped verandah on three sides. A verandah is like a covered porch. The roof is made of tin and has special supports called twin eaves brackets.

The front of the house is very fancy. It has a bay window that sticks out. There's also beautiful cast-iron balustrading (railings). Timber columns with decorated tops support the roof. These columns have brackets and twin posts. They hold up a fancy fretwork pediment above the entrance.

The front door has four panels. It's made even prettier with special ruby-colored glass panels on the sides. These are called sidelights. Inside, a central hallway leads through the house. The walls are covered with tongue and groove boards. These are wooden boards that fit together tightly. Windows that open outwards, called sash windows, let you step onto the verandah.

Both the house and its garden have been lovingly restored. They look wonderful today!
