Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hester Marian Wagstaff was a talented English artist. She designed beautiful jewellery, made pottery, and drew pictures for books. She also wrote fun stories for children. Hester was born in Leighton Buzzard in 1892. For many years, she helped run a creative place called the Petersfield Workshops in Petersfield, Hampshire. She worked there with her friends Flora Twort and Maria Brahms.

Her Amazing Art and Stories

Hester Wagstaff was very creative. She wrote and drew many books for young readers. Her stories often featured animals and their adventures. Some of her popular books include The Tale of the Jolly Robin and The Adventures of Velvet & Vicky. She also illustrated books written by other authors, like A Rook among the Magpies.

Drawing Detailed Maps

In 1937, Hester Wagstaff drew a very detailed and unique pictorial map of Eton College and the area around it. This map was special because it showed places with little pictures instead of just names. Her own hand-coloured map stayed with her family for 70 years. Later, in 1948, she allowed her map to be used in a book about Eton College called Eton Medley. It was used as a special picture at the front or back of the book.
